Women should find gynecologists and obstetric doctors to maintain health during and after pregnancy. While obstetrics work with women who are pregnant or have just had children, gynecologists deal with general reproductive system health. You can find many OBGYNs listed in the online directory, which makes it difficult for some women to decide which doctors are right for them. We provide a few questions that you can use to help you decide which doctors have the experience to give you the health care that you need. First, ask them how long they have practiced in women’s health. Those who have practiced for several years should have experience with hysterectomy, birth plans, menopause, infertility, pregnancy, pap smears, tubal pregnancy, uterine, pelvic, ovary, and cervix exams, and various screenings. Ask the doctors if they have experience with pediatric and adolescent gynecology for girls who are about to begin their menstrual cycles or have gotten their first periods. Ask the OBGYNs if they use ultra sounds and exams to check the vagina and uterus for signs of cancer and other diseases so that they can determine if you need treatment for symptoms like pain or discharges. Ask the doctors if they are prepared to use surgery like a hysterectomy to improve women’s health if it is necessary. When you find a doctor with enough experience, you should meet with them so that you can talk about your family history and concerns. This will also give you an opportunity to make sure you feel comfortable with him or her.
